A Trip to the Y: The Land of Little Results

Dear Boys and Girls,

I work from home 4 or 5 days out of the week. So, I decided to join a group fitness class at the local YMCA to add a little fun to my life and fitness routine.

I went in there expecting to be unimpressed, but with an open mind. I mean, let's face it, after Tony Horton, Chalene Johnson, Debbie Siebbers, or Shaun T. as my personal (albeit virtual) trainers, almost everyone else pales in comparison.

While Michelle was no Chalene or Debbie, her class surprisingly kicked my butt. It felt great to do a completely different routine, even to be a little or a lot uncoordinated while using the step block or whatever you call it! On a scale of 1 to 10, I gave my workout a 10. Really. It was good!

Now, I couldn't help but notice how many people in the room were following right along, but they looked out of shape.

Now, wait. I know that one can be cardiovascularly in shape, but not look fit. I am not critiquing the folks in that class for not looking like me. I'm not that vain and I'm not that big of a jerk. Really.

But, I know (and I know because people write to me on a daily basis regarding this very issue) that 99% of the people that work out and who haul their butts to the gym on a regular basisor do any kind of fitness program want to see results. Many don't. Almost all of the folks in my class today were kind of chubby, not obese, but they had a tire around their waist or a little/big pouch. Again, I know not everyone wants to have a six pack or look like a fitness model. That is not my point.

I really felt sad while doing my thing there today. I felt that almost every single one of these people were missing the most important part of the equation:

CLEAN EATING

If I were a fitness instructor at the Y, I think I would stress the importance of eating clean and hand out sample meal plans...even if my "job" was simply to instruct the class. I'll be honest, it's probably only a matter of time before I come in there with meal plans and possibly get myself kicked out. What can I say, I'm a woman on a mission.

I want others to feel good about themselves, to see the fruits of their labor. The solution is actually quite simple, yet, most people don't know about it.

That's about to change, at least at my local Y!

Bring it!

thanks for pointing this out barbie, it felt like the post was for me, as much as i workout 5 to 6 times a day, i KNOW NOW that the main reason why i couldn't reach my goal weight is that i am not eating CLEAN.

will start eating clean and will get back to you with the results.

tnx barbie!

This is so true, I see it daily and the thing I come across is that most people don't want to change their eating, they want a "quick fix" and will starve themselves or do any thing else they can to loose weight except to change their diet! Clean eating is 90% of it!!

Word. I don't understand the people that do a ton of exercise to not see results. Time is precious--why they waste it (well, it's not a complete waste, but it's certainly not doing everything it could be) by exercising but then screwing themselves over with food? Especially considering a lot of people don't really like exercise, they just do it because they want their body to look good. Sad that so many have not reached that goal.

Thanks for all the comments, guys.

I really think..well, two things:

1. Some people know what it takes to lose the weight, but aren't willing to commit. It's 5:00 am right now...I didn't want to get up to do my workout. I got up because I told myself I didn't have a choice. My bed was suuuuuuuper comfy. Many people make excuses and say, "I'll do it later" but never get around to it.

IT goes the same way with eating.

2. A lot, and realllllllly, a lot of folks just don't know what works. I was one of them!!! I tried the scarsdale diet, laxatives, what I thought was low carb but god knows what that was, and I was even willing to try ALLY! I wasn't lazy, just didn't know what TRUE clean eating meant.
